Smith Wins U18 Suisse Title at Campra

Callum Smith (17) from Inverurie wins the Under 18 title in the Campra10km Classic in Switzerland on Sunday 30 December 2009 with a typical battling preformance, to cement his continued progress this season. He came 9th overall in the main 10km Juniors Race in a time of 29:11.3, which was won by Jonas Baumann (19) from Switzerland in 27:37. This secured him with the magic 100.26 FIS points, thus achieving the mark for the GB Oympic qualifying standard for the second time, since Idre in Sweden.
Callum was in impressive form all weekend coming 7th in the 1km Sprints Final on the Saturday 29 December 2009, won by Jovian Hediger (19) from Switzerland. In the same race Alex Standen returned to racing after a layoff with a 23 place and William Newman came 32nd, out of 50 starters.
In the Classic 10km on Sunday, William Newman came 37th (31:44.0) got the better of Alex Standen, who came 38th (31:56.5) out of 51 starters.
In the other Mens 15km Classic Race on Sunday PJ Barron (20) from Huntly and racing for Ireland came 24th in a time of 49:00.1. The race was won by Remo Fischer from Switzerland in 40:52.3. Simon Platt and David Lamb both suffering from a cold decided to pull out after 5km in order to be fit for next weekend.
